Located in and around the Mediterranean Sea has lots of natural harbors and the rivers are not very useful for trade, since they slow down a lot during certain times of the year. The most plentiful and natural resource was wood. The combination of these factors led the Greeks to becoming very good shipbuilders, and to use the sea to make a living.

The formation of Greek city-states was caused by Greece's mountainous terrain which limited communication between the city-states. Then they divided into separate governments with their own laws. There were only a few alliances in Greece these were then united every now and then to discuss whats going on.
